Gregor Hildebrandt started his ongoing photographic series of “Reflections” in 2009. Each work is completed through the same process: the artist places a subject in front of one of his “mirror paintings,” which are black monochromes made of VHS tape, and photographs the object's reflection in the dark glossy tape. Some of the so-called “mirror paintings” contain iconic films for Hildebrandt, however, the content of the tapes remain hidden, endowing the work with an invisible dimension.
The “Reflections” generally reference historical subjects of painting, such as portraits and still lifes. The completed work is a digital print on aluminum, and each print is framed in a unique brown frame with a fine red edge.
