In her new work Window (1), Melanie Siegel expands her artistic practice. At its
centre is the view through a window from the inside looking out—a motif that
Karin Kneffel has also explored frequently: the pane as both boundary and
intermediary. Siegel develops this motif in a distinctive way.
From
a cosy interior, we look through the glass onto a turbulent sea, rendered with
striking effect. The apparent seagulls look like shadows; in fact, they are
bird silhouettes affixed to the pane. Untamed nature remains outside, observed
from the safety of the sheltered interior. Through her distinctive, finely
executed painting, Melanie Siegel sets the protected home against the stormy
world and an increasingly turbulent natural environment.
